Shortly after the release of the book was announced, many criticised Fauci, the director of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and the chief medical advisor to the president, for what they saw as an attempt to profit from the coronavirus pandemic, given that he particularly gained attention and notoriety as the country's leading infectious disease expert and, at times, the head of a White House coronavirus task force.
Paul is one of the most vocal Fauci critics who's pushing that Fauci's emails prove the doctor is lying about whether the Wuhan lab pursued what's called "gain of function" research - which would make a virus more contagious or deadly.
"I would like to see the medical records of the three people who are reported to have got sick in 2019".
"Masks are really for infected people to prevent them from spreading infection to people who are not infected rather than protecting uninfected people from acquiring infection". What do the medical records of those people say?More news: Remote Learning to Continue across Ontario for the Remainder of School Year
The idea of a lab leak was until recently widely dismissed as a fringe theory, despite being pushed by senior figures in the Trump administration.
Biden last week ordered U.S. intelligence services to come to a conclusion within 90 days about what started the pandemic.
Speaking to CNN on Thursday, Fauci was asked about his email to Daszak-who has strongly denied the Wuhan lab leak theory-and said it's "nonsense" that he intentionally attempted to downplay the theory previous year.
The Kentucky Republican also said Daszak can not be part of any investigation into COVID-19 origins. "Had that not been done, our wonderful vaccines would not have been administered until October of this year", he said.More news: French Open deletes tweet on Naomi Osaka press blackout
- And then given that there were some things that Fauci said privately that contracted- contrasted with what he said publicly, whether it was masks or whether or not someone who had the virus could have immunity, or you know, other questions as well.
"Also, Dr. Fauci was totally against masks when I thought they would at least be helpful".
Paul claimed the nation's top infectious disease expert had an "incestuous" relationship' with Dr. Peter Daszak, a British zoologist whose EcoHealth Alliance non-profit steered US funding toward the Wuhan lab, and the scientists working there. "But we need to keep on investigating until a possibility is proven".
"I have always felt that the overwhelming likelihood, given the experience we have had with Sars, Mers, Ebola, HIV, bird flu, the swine flu pandemic of 2009, was that the virus jumped species", he said.More news: California to give US$116.5 mil in prizes for vaccinations
