The Justice Department is investigating Gaetz, a noted ally of former president Donald Trump, over his alleged relationship with a teenage girl, The Washington Post reported, in a probe that began while Trump was still in office. But there are no rules addressing lawmakers under investigation.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., said Wednesday that he plans to speak with Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla. At one point, Barr was scheduled for a meet-and-greet with Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee. "Those are serious implications", McCarthy said. It is out of this investigation, officials told NBC News, that authorities developed a lead that persuaded them to investigate whether Gaetz had been involved with sex trafficking of a minor girl. "So let's get all the information".
However, Katie Benner, one of the New York Times reporters who broke the story about the DOJ's sex-trafficking probe, told MSNBC's Rachel Maddow on Tuesday that the investigation into Gaetz was launched late last summer and had been underway for more than six months by the time Gaetz said his father was contacted.
He denied that he ever had a relationship with any underage girls and said the allegations against him were "as searing as they are false".
Some Democrats have called for his committee positions to be revoked. During the interview Gaetz denied all of the allegations against him.More news: GOP delegation demands answers amid escalating Biden border crisis
As for Tucker Carlson, who I can imagine could expect a call from the Federal Bureau of Investigation pretty soon, his permanent expression of utter bewilderment seemed to actually be genuine confusion for once.
"Remember all the conspiracy theories and lies like Trump/Russia collusion and propaganda that the media has spread around. I stand with @mattgaetz", she tweeted. The lawyer has been in private practice for more than two decades.
He claimed that he and his family were the victims of a $25 million extortion plot involving a former Justice Department official and said he was cooperating with federal officials. "I demand the DOJ immediately release the tapes, made at their direction, which implicates their former colleague in crimes against me based on false allegations". The firm said McGee had served in top positions at the USA attorney's office in Florida about 25 years ago and his "reputation for integrity and ethical conduct was impeccable".
"Which as you saw, he did", Carlson said with a smirk, adding that he didn't think Gaetz's appearance "clarified much" but that the still-unfolding story is "deeply interesting".
"The Justice Department regularly prosecutes such cases, and offenders often receive severe sentences", writes the Times. "You know, providing for flights and hotel rooms for people that you are dating who are of legal age is not a crime and I'm just troubled that lack of any sort of legitimate investigation into me would then permute, would then convert into this extortion attempt".More news: Florida Rep. According to the New York Times, the investigation into Mr Gaetz was part of a broader federal investigation into one of the congressman's friends - Joel Greenberg, a fellow Florida politician.
After defending himself, Gaetz said to Carlson, "I'm not the only person on screen right now who's been falsely accused of a awful sex act".
"I have definitely, in my single days, provided for women I've dated", he told Axios.
"You just referred to a mentally ill viewer who accused me of a sex crime 20 years ago and, of course, it was not true", said Carlson.
"I know that there was a demand for money in exchange for a commitment that he could make this investigation go away along with his co-conspirators".More news: Suspect in Colorado shooting bought gun legally
