Australia sets COVID test for travelers as Brisbane locks down

Scott Morrison expects the United Kingdom strain will become "the dominant strain of the virus globally".

She'd worked one shift as a casual quarantine cleaner at the Hotel Grand Chancellor, in Leichardt St in Brisbane's CBD on January 2 and took trains to and from work.

"They're flying home now, because otherwise they've got to self-isolate", Alister said.

"If you are already in New South Wales and you have travelled to New South Wales from those locations since 12:01am on the 2 January, we expect you to stay isolated".

The escalation comes after a hotel quarantine cleaner testing positive for the new United Kingdom variant of COVID, which is said to be up to 70 per cent more transmissible.

Coles Chief Operating Officer Matt Swindells said the health and safety of customers and team members remained Coles' top priority with all staff within the hotspot required to wear masks.

"The risk is extremely low, very, very, very low because she is right at the end of her potential infectious period, and with a normal variant, we would not be at all concerned".

The new restrictions mark the first a mask mandate has been put in place in Queensland since the pandemic began nearly a year ago.

Anyone who lives in the Maleny area is being urged to come forward for testing if they develop any symptoms.

Further information can be found on the Queensland Health website.

"The scenario that we have now seen from this woman is leaving on Day 10, not having an exit test and, importantly, not having the genome sequencing known until after she was released", Minister D'Ath said.

"That would not be occurring now".

He continued: "if you really need to, comply with the moments your government has placed on new in Brisbane but comply with them here in New South Wales".

The NZ government also indicated there were more restrictions to come.

"We are pleased that these processes that are now in place and I understand that this has been agreed to nationally now as well".

Tasmania, SA, WA and the Northern Territory have all effectively closed their borders to Brisbane following the city re-entering lockdown.

"The situation is very fluid and very hard, and I'm very pleased it appears there's been very few additional cases in the eastern states in the last day, but obviously we're not out of the woods yet", Mr McGowan said.

"Zero cases overnight is very encouraging". I think we're going to learn a lot in the next three to five days.

Additionally, the state has introduced a mask mandate for the Greater Brisbane area, so basically, if you need to leave the house for one of the four essential reasons listed above, you *must* wear a mask.

If the virus does enter the community again, Esterman says that current containment measures, for instance, those being deployed to handle the Sydney outbreak, will be insufficient to cope with more highly transferable strains of the virus.
