"The Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF) took full control of Axum, Adwa and the surrounding areas of Adigrat", the state of emergency task force established by the federal government to watch over the ongoing military operations against the TPLF, said in a statement.
"News circulating that the envoys will be travelling to Ethiopia to mediate between the Federal Government and TPLF's criminal element is fake", a government taskforce on Tigray tweeted on Saturday morning.
On Friday, the African Union appointed three former national presidents as special envoys who will be dispatched "in the coming days": Joaquim Chissano of Mozambique, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia and Kgalema Motlanthe of South Africa.

Nearly immediately, though, Ethiopia denied that the envoys would mediate between the government and the northern Tigray region, labeling the reports of mediation as "fake news".

Abiy denies that, saying he is seeking only to restore law and order and preserve the unity of Ethiopia and its 115 million people.
Redwan Hussein, a spokesperson for the Government's taskforce on Tigray, contrasted with Colonel Tsegaye's threats of "no mercy", and said there was still time for TPLF leaders to surrender. Tigrayan authorities say 100,000 people have been displaced, and the United Nations has warned that an additional 1.1 million people may need aid.

The prime minister drew plaudits for opening up Ethiopia's closed economy and repressive political system after taking office. Abiy's parents are from the larger Oromo and Amhara ethnic groups.
