The Detroit Pistons and the other 29 teams will play three games against each conference opponent (42 total games per team).
The five teams in the Heat's division will play all five teams from the East's Atlantic division (Boston Celtics, Brooklyn Nets, New York Knicks, Philadelphia 76ers, Toronto Raptors) twice on the road and once at home.

The 2020-21 regular-season schedule will be released in two segments.
A full schedule for the 2020-2021 season will be rolled out in stages, with the first half of the season revealed during pre-season training camps.

The league will release the second half of the schedule toward the end of the first half portion of the schedule.
The All-Star break is scheduled to take place March 5-10, 2021, between the First Half and Second Half of the regular season. The play-in structure will include teams with the seventh-highest through tenth-highest winning percentages in each conference. The teams with the seventh- and eighth-highest winning percentages will have two chances to make the playoffs while the ninth- and 10th-highest winningest teams will have one chance. All dates as per Eastern Time (ET). The first half of the season then runs December 22 through March 4, followed by an All-Star break March 5-10 - though the All-Star Game in Indianapolis was scrapped. The second half is scheduled for March 11 to May 16.

The "Seven-Eight Game" will be between the seventh and eighth teams while the "Nine-Ten Game" will be between teams nine and 10. -10th game. That victor will advance to the playoffs as the eighth seed; the loser will be eliminated.
