The British publication, one of the oldest and best-respected medical journals in the world, confirmed that the Sputnik V vaccine had successfully produced antibodies in all 76 participants in early-stage trials.
Almost a fifth of 11,000 people enrolled so far in a 30,000-volunteer US trial testing a COVID-19 vaccine from Pfizer PFE.N and German partner BioNTech 22UAy.F are Black or Latino, groups among the hardest hit by the coronavirus, a top Pfizer executive told Reuters last month. The report said that the vaccine was safe, well-tolerated, and did not cause any adverse effects in volunteers.More news: Environment activists blockade United Kingdom newspaper printing plants
Ehanire said a ministerial team would be raised to continue further engagement with the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Nigeria on the vaccine, as well as other areas of interests highlighted at the meeting. However, booster vaccinations that use the same adenovirus vector might not produce an effective response because the immune system may recognise and attack the vector.
The covid vaccine has been developed by the Gamaleya research institute for epidemiology and microbiology in Moscow in coordination with the Russian defence ministry. The first formulation was a frozen one and the second one was a lyophilized one. They elicited a number of mild side effects, such as pain at injection site or elevated body temperature but over 42 days of trials the researchers have registered no potentially life-threatening complications.More news: Liverpool Dominates Shortlist for Player of the Year Award
According to the scientists, the booster dose has elevated significantly the effectiveness of the Sputnik V vaccine, since after a single injection the antibodies were developed in only 60 per cent of volunteers. "With this [publication], we answer all of the questions of the West that were diligently asked over the past three weeks, frankly with the clear goal of tarnishing the Russian vaccine", said Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, the country's sovereign wealth fund which has backed the vaccine.More news: Dani Ceballos: Arsenal re-sign Real Madrid midfielder on loan
