Cuomo's theory? No matter the political pressure, keep the state closed until the virus has demonstrably regressed as measured by widely available evidence, reduced hospitalization rates, and decreased deaths. The order does not apply to people who are traveling for work. Advertisement According to data from Johns Hopkins University last updated on June 28, nine states now have positive test rates greater than 10%: Alabama, Arizona, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, Nevada, South Carolina, Utah, and Texas.

Trump said in late May he would not wear mask in front of cameras to not "give the press the pleasure of seeing it".

'If we are going to maintain the progress we've seen, we need everyone to take personal responsibility, Cuomo said in a statement, Business Insider reports.

The new law said that employers with more than 100 employees had to provide at least 14 days of paid sick leave and guarantee job protection for the quarantine's duration.

New Yorkers also were allowed to claim their benefits if they were home caring for someone infected by COVID-19. Earlier in the week, Cuomo, along with the governors of New Jersey and CT, implemented a 14-day quarantine for travelers arriving from high-risk states based on the same 10% positivity rate threshold.

The governor's office says four others who attended the ceremony and also had contact with the first positive case have tested positive for COVID-19 as well.

"In New York, we're number 46 in the nation in terms of percentage of deaths at nursing homes, compared to the total percentage", Cuomo said, referring to numbers compiled by the New York Times. The rate of infections on Saturday were less than 1 per cent statewide.

Conditions in Texas, Arizona and Florida all strike record day-to-day highs this earlier week.

Across the country, there have been more than 2.4 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 and more than 125,000 death attributed to the virus.

The numbers have continued to trend in a positive direction in recent weeks, but NY isn't out of the woods yet: 616 new cases of the coronavirus were diagnosed Saturday out of 61,906 tests conducted statewide.
