Barely a couple of weeks after this finding, a CDC report said that genetic material from coronavirus was found on surfaces of Japan's Diamond Princess cruise ship 17 days after passengers disembarked.
Last month, the page listed "Spread from contact with contaminated surfaces and objects" under its own sub-heading, just below a similar sub-head on "Person-to-person spread".
The CDC has now placed this possibility under a new category of causes that "do not" allow the virus to "spread easily", although such infections "may still be possible".
The agency says more than 3% of people who show symptoms will require hospitalization, but that number is more than double for seniors.More news: New iPhone SE Plus delayed until 2nd half of 2021
However people should remain cautious as transmission from contaminated surfaces "may still be possible" as scientists work to discover more about how the virus spreads, the CDC warns.
In order to keep rats and other pests away, the CDC recommends that homeowners and landlords take a few precautions.
If feasible, CDC officials also advised that a newborn should be temporarily separated from its mother if she has a confirmed or suspected case of the virus in an effort to lower the risk of transmission to the child.More news: Boris Johnson u-turns on surcharge on worldwide NHS workers after Tory rebellion
The virus can potentially spread in other ways, though.
Before, researchers originally thought the virus could live on some surfaces for up to three days.
The agency continues to note that the virus is thought to mainly spread from person to person - even from those not showing symptoms.
Nursing homes have been noted too to be hotspots for the spread of COVID-19, with the close proximity of residents contributing to the spread within those facilities. Initially, the virus should have been transmitted to a surface in large amounts.More news: DeSantis Lifts All Restrictions On Youth Activities
And with individuals who may be infected with COVID-19 but are asymptomatic, a person who feels completely healthy and has not yet been tested can be spreading the virus unknowingly. This will prevent the risk of formation on the surface of the tissue germs or viruses.
