Yet, here we are, years later, and as the nominations are once again announced, critics and Twitter users are disappointed, complaining that the lists are too white - notably, the only actor of colour nominated in a performance category is Cynthia Erivo as Harriet Tubman - and far, far too masculine. 'Joker, ' a supervillian origin story starring Joaquin Phoenix, racked up 11 Academy Award nominations. It walked away with six in total: Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Director, Best Film Editing, Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing. The then 33-year-old made her solo directorial debut with the coming-of-age film, starring Saoirse Ronan, and she was nominated for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Screenplay.
Though Gerwig was, by all accounts, snubbed for Best Director for Little Women this year, she was recognized in 2017 for Lady Bird. Another fan favorite, Lupita Nyong'o, was also snubbed for her dual role in Jordan Peele's "Us". "This film is a testament to the brilliance of Greta Gerwig".
