The Tar Heels would just as soon things proceed in the future the way this game did, a slowish start leading to a runaway: N.C. State led 10-6 at the half in a miserable, soaking rain, but when the skies cleared to start the third quarter the Tar Heels stormed ahead with 28 unanswered points in the quarter on three Javonte Williams touchdowns and a 52-yard pass from Howell to Dyami Brown.
Freshman Cole Anthony, who had largely controlled North Carolina's half court offense on his own, left the game with his fourth foul with 10 minutes remaining. The Ducks are coming out of a tough overtime loss for Gonzaga, and the Tar Heels got their hit from MI before riding an impressive comeback to reduce the game to nine points to close things.
UNC: The Tar Heels will play in Friday's third-place game against the Gonzaga-Oregon loser.
"Sure, everyone's down a little right now, but we got another game tomorrow at 11:30, so we gotta lock in", he said. The response was UNC's best overall performance this season. Boise State had the best success, shooting 42.9 percent from the floor against the Ducks. OR lost games against Gonzaga and North Carolina by a combined five points and Senior Payton Pritchard has picked up where he left off from last season when he helped the team pushing the Ducks to a ten-game winning streak into the NCAA Tournament. He did not play well against Gonzaga. "It really hurts when you lose a couple of games to a couple of really good teams and you don't do everything under your control". When they did score, they couldn't get a stop.More news: England's second Test chances rely on Joe Root flourishing
"We just gotta be better at team defense", he said.
Seton Hall (5-2) went up 64-46 on a layup by Powell at the 8:38 mark of the second half.
And UNC struggled against MI.
"I hope that none of my teams will ever quit", Williams said. UNC finished with a 47-39 rebounding advantage, though OR had a 22-19 edge on the offensive glass. Oregon's Payton Pritchard scored 17 points, including a critical 3-pointer in the final minute of regulation.More news: Its impact on local economy — Small Business Saturday
Despite their ineffectiveness on the inside, the Ducks timely buckets and transition play helped them stay in the game, trailing 46-41 at the half. They also clamped down on the defensive end, shutting the Wolfpack's offense down and sealing the victory. That's how Gonzaga did it.
North Carolina ended its ACC schedule with a loss to N.C. State the previous three years and both 2017 and '18 ended without a bowl trip.
There's none of that optimism at N.C. State, where the Wolfpack dropped its sixth straight to close out a hard, injury-plagued season at 4-8.More news: Thanksgiving storm blankets Southern California mountains with snow and delays holiday travel
