The disclosures, declared Monday by the International Astronomical Union, bring to 82 the total number of natural satellites known to circle the 6th planet from the sun.
If it's any consolation to the Jupiter crowd, our solar system's biggest planet - Jupiter - still has the biggest moon.
This kind of grouping of outer moons is also seen around Jupiter, indicating violent collisions occurred between moons in the Saturnian system or with outside objects such as passing asteroids or comets. "I have been using some of the largest telescopes in the world to find the new moons and an updated computer algorithm to link the new discoveries year to year, allowing us to officially determine they are orbiting Saturn and thus are new moons of Saturn". Future greater telescopes shall be wanted to acknowledge something else smaller.
It's harder to recognizing mini-moons around Saturn than Jupiter, Sheppard mentioned, given how much farther Saturn is. These baby moons may have come from larger parent moons that broke apart right after Saturn formed. 17 of the Moons have retrograde orbits - meaning they move around in the opposite direction to Saturn's rotation.More news: Harry Styles fans in a frenzy over mystery posters
The astronomer also narrated how hard it was for them to spot small moons around Saturn, given that the planet is farther away, and its rings continuously obstruct their view.
See Sheppard's visual summary of Saturn's moons here, and peruse Sky & Telescope's catalog of solar system moons old and new here. The third, and the more-distant retrograde moons, each take more than three years to complete an orbit.
The jury is still out on whether any planets beyond our solar system have even more moons. The remaining prograde moon was placed in the Gallic group (shown in green), but it's much farther out than previously known Gallic moons, so this designation may not stick, according to the Carnegie release. Sheppard noted that there may be a hundred more moons, albeit smaller, orbiting Saturn still waiting to be discovered.
Others suggested names along Sheppard's guidelines, including the hunter-warrior Fionn from Irish lore and Sila, the Inuit god believed to govern life and breath.

The other three moons orbit in the same direction as Saturn rotates. The outermost group, which includes two of the pro-grade moons, has an orbit angled at 46 degrees and are named after Inuit mythology.
Elegant final year, Sheppard stumbled on 12 fresh moons spherical Jupiter.
Despite the naming guidelines in place, there are already out-of-bounds suggestions on Twitter for naming Saturn, including "Mooncricket" and "Moon Tae-il", in homage to the South Korean boy band singer. They're all at roughly the same distance from the planet, putting them in the Norse group of moons.
Well this time, Sheppard is asking for the moons to be named "after giants from Norse, Gallic or Inuit mythology".More news: Advance Polling Stations open Friday
