"And being away from the family back in San Antonio, too, that played a little bit of a role [in retiring], and so I came to a conclusion that it was just time to move on".
And now that he's got more free time, Parker is looking forward to doing "a lot of stuff". He played 17 seasons for the San Antonio Spurs and made the post-season every year of his career before joining the Hornets last season and missing the playoffs.
Parker told "The Undefeated" about his retirement on June 1 but did not want the interview to be released until Monday. A 2011 NBA Champion and Finals MVP, Nowitzki helped deliver Dallas their first NBA title in franchise history, when the Mavs toppled the Heat's Big Three of James, Wade, and Chris Bosh. Duncan retired in 2016, Ginobili retired in 2018, and both have since had their jerseys retired by the Spurs. The team is expected to retire Parker's No. 9 jersey as well.
"It is with great emotion that I put an end to my career", Parker wrote in his farewell. I know our organization in Charlotte is grateful for what he brought to us in our year together.More news: Yuvraj ready for fun after announcing global retirement
"They were like, 'Are you sure?'" Parker said. I'm so happy for you. He is widely regarded as the greatest French basketball player of all time. "I have so much stuff going on that I've always been at peace with that decision".
Parker is already busy in retirement.
He is opening the Tony Parker Adequat Academy global school in his hometown of Lyon, France, in September.
The athlete will continue to live in San Antonio, Texas, he said, but will also spend time in France, where he owns and serves as president of ASVEL - a professional men's and women's basketball club.More news: Hackers Hit US Customs to Steal Travelers' Photos, License Images
Without a doubt, Parker will be sorely missed in the league.
But this is a sad day for Spurs fans and basketball fans around the world as the remnants of one of the NBA's greatest trios are finally finished with their historic playing careers.
"That is one of my dreams", Parker said. "I worked a lot, enormously received, it was an incredible adventure!" We're building a new arena right now, and we're gonna enter the EuroLeague and the EuroLeague is growing very fast.
"It was kind of different because I was in there with Charlotte, so I didn't feel like the need of having a goodbye", he said.More news: Kim Kardashian shares first photo of son Psalm West
Parker had previously spoken of his desire to play 20 seasons in the National Basketball Association, but said his view changed after playing in Charlotte, who finished outside the playoff standings. By retiring, he winds up two seasons shy of that goal. I had a good season with the Hornets, and I was healthy. "I want to ski", Parker told the outlet.
