After the deadly coronavirus outbreak in China's Wuhan province, there is another virus that is spreading panic among residents of Yunnan province as a man who tested positive of hantavirus has died. After being tested positive for hantavirus, 32 other commuters on the bus were also tested.
Anyone who comes into contact with rodents that carry hantaviruses is at risk of HPS as rodent infestation in and around the home remains the primary risk for hantavirus exposure.More news: Why Oprah and Stedman quarantined separately
A person infected with what are known as "New World " hantaviruses in the Americas can develop what is known as hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS), while the "Old World" type found in Europe or Asia can trigger hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS).
More than 386,350 declared cases have been registered in 175 countries and territories since the pandemic first emerged in China in December.
But hantavirus is nothing like the latest strain of coronavirus - let's look at the facts.
While the initial symptoms of HFRS too remain the same, it can cause low blood pressure, acute shock, vascular leakage, and acute kidney failure.
HPS can't be given from individual to individual, while HFRS transmission between individuals is amazingly uncommon.More news: Cowboys center Travis Frederick retires from NFL
The bus, which set out from Cangyuan County, had 33 people aboard, including two drivers, one medical staff, and 30 migrant workers. The CDC says rodent population control is the main strategy to prevent the spread of infection.
The disease can not be passed on from person to person.
The virus can also be transmitted when someone breathes in hantavirus-contaminated air.
"'There is no specific treatment, cure, or vaccine for hantavirus infection", the CDC warned, saying patients often need intensive care to "help them through the period of severe respiratory distress". The Hantavirus disease can be contracted if a human touches their face, eyes, mouth or nose after touching rodent droppings, urine or nesting materials.More news: Croatia hit by deadly natural disaster while in coronavirus lockdown
