"We had to find a name that did not refer to a geographical location, an animal, or an individual or group of people", said the WHO Director-General, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said during a media chat on Tuesday.
Tedros was speaking at a press conference in Geneva, at the conclusion of a two-day research and innovation forum on COVID-19, during which leading health experts from around the world met to assess the current level of knowledge about the new disease, identify gaps and work together, so that critical research can begin immediately.
He said that as time passes, his confidence in stopping the outbreak will depend on the strength of measures taken, hence asking all countries to be "as aggressive as possible" and not to allow the virus "have a space" for regional transmission.More news: Woods fades to five adrift at PGA Genesis Invitational
In scientific and medical literature, COVID-19 has been referred to as 2019nCoV, certainly not a catchy name. "It also gives us a standard format to use for any future coronavirus outbreaks", World Health Organization director-general Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a press conference.
The International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses have designated the virus as SARS-CoV-2. The national death toll is now 1,016.More news: Coronavirus: Woman diagnosed in London went to A&E in an Uber
World Health Organization's Tedros says - number of newly confirmed cases of coronavirus from china has stabilised over the past week but that must be interpreted with extreme caution.
She also appreciated China's sharing of the genetic sequence of the virus, which helped other countries to quickly detect and prepare for the virus."Early data sharing really helps save lives", she said, commending and congratulating China for being that open and transparent.
He added that a WHO-led advance team that travelled to China earlier this week had made "good progress" on the composition and scope of its work. The virus has spread to more than 20 countries of the world including Wuhan, the capital of the same province. Two deaths have been reported outside of China, one in Philippines and one in Hong Kong.More news: Trump thanks Justice Department for softening sentence request for ally Roger Stone
