The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the second case of coronavirus in the US on Friday, revealing that the patient is a woman in her 60s who is located in IL and had recently traveled to Wuhan, China.
More than 1,300 people have been infected globally with a virus traced to a seafood market in the central city of Wuhan that was illegally selling wildlife.
On Thursday, a coronavirus patient died in northern Hebei province - making it the first death outside Hubei.
The latest confirmed case involves a 60-year-old woman who returned from Wuhan, China, on January 13 and began experiencing symptoms including fever, coughing and shortness of breath three to four days later, health officials in Chicago told reporters Friday. However, most of the cases are in Hubei province, which is home to Wuhan. Chinese authorities locked down travel to and from several cities near the center of the outbreak, affecting some 35 million residents. "They're putting up a 1,000-bed hospital in just a period of a week", Zervos says.
A second travel-related case of a new strain of coronavirus in the US has been confirmed in a Chicago resident. Another major city, Shanghai, which is much closer to the epicenter of the outbreak, cancelled some activities scheduled for the holiday season and said that some tourist attractions will be closed, including some parks, viewpoints on the skyscrapers and main museums.More news: Trump unveils Space Force logo
It is not clear how lethal the new coronavirus is, or even whether it is as risky as the ordinary flu, which kills tens of thousands of people every year in the US alone.
Officials also said 63 other cases across 22 states are now under investigation, but that while the virus is considered a "serious public health threat", the immediate risk to the general American public is "considered low at this time".
It could instead reflect better monitoring and reporting of the newly discovered virus, which can cause cold- and flu-like symptoms, including cough, fever and shortness of breath, but can worsen to pneumonia.
The CDC says that at the five airports where incoming flights are being monitored, roughly 2,000 travelers from 200 flights have been screened.

In France, Health Minister Agnes Buzyn said that two infected patients had travelled in China and that France should brace for more such cases. Most of the deaths and overall cases have been in Hubei.
