Kaplan adds that the league will make an announcement with the details on how the scrimmage will work and some new elements for the skills competition. In 2019, team USA's Brianna Decker and Kendall Coyne Schofield and Canada's Renata Fast and Rebecca Johnston were invited to demonstrate the skills competition events before the National Hockey League players competed.
According to a report by ESPN, this year's NHL All-Star Game will include a three-on-three duel between top American and Canadian players, in addition to the established three-on-three tournament between stars from the division's four divisions.

National team players from the USA and Canada will be split into two 10-player teams and compete in a 20-minute 3-on-3 scrimmage during the skills competition. Schofield impressed in the Fastest Skater event and held her own while competing with some of the NHL's speediest players, finishing seventh in the field of eight competitors.
The women selected to play in the All-Star weekend event are part of the Professional Women's Hockey Players Association, a pool of players who are boycotting professional hockey this year in an effort to find a more sustainable league.

What's hard to gauge is what signal the NHL might be sending by having a number of the world's top female players sharing the spotlight when women's hockey is in a state of flux. The skills competition is set for January 24 and the 3-on-3 tournament among NHL All-Stars is January 25.
A majority of players, however, balked at making the jump to the NWHL and instead vowed to not play professionally in North America this season.

The NHL isn't the only league hosting top women's players in it's All-Star event.
