In the future, Gartner believes the PC market will continue to decline, despite the growth this year, though new technologies like foldable PCs are "something to keep an eye on".
Meanwhile, Gartner's PC industry numbers tell a similar story, with data suggesting that worldwide PC shipments grew 2.3% for Q4 2019 and 0.6% for the entire year.
PC shipments climbed to 70.6 million units in the period that ended December 31, researcher Gartner Inc said Monday in a report.
This business-specific growth looked particularly good against the ongoing weakness in consumer PC demand, according to Kitagawa, with business PC demand leading to unit growth in five of the last seven quarters. Without this shortage, she said shipments would have grown faster than the reported results. Global shipments during the quarter exceeded forecasts to just under 71.8 million units, the highest quarterly volume in four years (4Q15).More news: VA Governor Bans Guns on State Capitol Grounds, Declares ‘State of Emergency’
IDC said that worldwide PC sales grew 2.7 per cent for 2019 as a whole, ending eight successive down years since the PC market grew 1.7 per cent in 2011. The study attributes this decline to weaker PC spending in China, which accounts for nearly 60% of overall APAC PC market, due to political and trade concerns. The company with 17.4% market share witnessed the maximum growth rate of 10.7% among all PC vendors, going by IDC.
Apple's market share was also down, dipping from 7.9 percent in Q4 2018 to 7.5 percent in Q4 2019.
While market challenges persist, 2019 showed clearly that demand for traditional desktops, workstations and laptops still exists even with the popularity of smartphones and other mobile devices. It also recorded YoY growth in all the regions of the world except Asia/Pacific. Only two of the top vendors experienced a decline in U.S. PC shipments, compared with four in the fourth quarter of 2018.More news: Kim Kardashian Packs Into Barely There Pink Bikini, "About To Pop Out"
Considering that most commercial upgrades from Windows 7 to Windows 10 will be concluded by the end of the month, Gartner and IDC both predict global sales to steadily decline again over 2020.
Acer Group rounded out the top 5 with a 6.1% market share during the quarter and 6.4% for the year.
