As the "Soul Man" of the WWE, Johnson paved the way for black athletes in the first wrestling organization.
There's no word yet on what led to Johnson's passing, but the news was announced this evening by the Cauliflower Alley Club.
Johnson rose to prominence on the wrestling scene with various promotions in the 1960s and 1970s, during which he went by the ring name Rocky Johnson.More news: Manchester United vs. Wolverhampton Wanderers - Football Match Report
Johnson would retire in 1991 but continue to have a massive impact on the wrestling world as he worked with fellow WWE Hall of Famer Pat Patterson to train his son inside the squared circle. On November 15, 1983, Johnson teamed with Soul Patrol partner Tony Atlas to defeat The Wild Samoans for the WWE World Tag Team belts in Allentown, PA.
Rocky is survived by his son Dwayne, his widow Dana Martin - whom he married in 2004 - and his two other children, Curtis and Wanda.
He started in the WWE in 1983 with rivalries with the likes of Greg (The Hammer) Valentine, Don Muraco and Adrian Adonis. The Rock added: 'He raised me with that tough physical love and used to beat my a** in the gyms and on wrestling mats.
He added, "I hated it when I was a kid, but grateful for it as a man. Im lucky I could do this and thanks for the a- kickins".More news: Machine keeps human livers alive outside body
