Believe it or not, the most profitable comic-book movie prior to "Joker" wasn't any of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The new Terminator might have dethroned Joker to take the top spot at the United States box office this week, but the Joaquin Phoenix starrer has become one of the most profitable comic book-based movie in the history after smashing several records.
Long story short, the Joker movie's been doing extremely well, so well in fact that it was announced by Forbes to be the most profitable comic book ever made.More news: Watch this adorable beluga whale play fetch with a football
Five weeks after its release, "Joker" is still breaking records.
Joker's success doesn't really come as a surprise knowing Joaquin Phoenix's ability as an actor, however, the movie has been clouded by controversy ever since its global release.
According to a report in Forbes, the film was made on a budget of $62.5 million and has collected $957 million at the domestic and overseas box office, combined. That it happens to be an R-rated psychological drama is a bonus of sorts, as it's the third-cheapest $900 million grosser of all time after Bohemian Rhapsody($905 million on a $52 million budget) and The Lion King($968 million on a $55 million budget in 1994). What is most spectacular is that Joker did this without remaining shown in China.More news: Russian professor arrested after severed arms found in backpack
Put on a happy face, because Joaquin Phoenix's Joker is the most profitable comic book movie of all time. (To date, Joker has made $291 million more worldwide than Justice League.) Hopefully the takeaway here is to do more bold, unusual takes on comic books, and not just more Joker movies.
