On the watch face there are four complications where information can be displayed and what gets displayed can be customized by the user. Considering the price and functionality, the new Hybrid HR can be a really nice middle ground for people who need more than a typical low-end hybrid watch but don't need to go all the way to the capabilities (and price) of a full-display smartwatch. It nearly feels like an old-school Pebble watch fused with an everyday analog-style watch.
The Hybrid HR does not come with a built-in Global Positioning System, however.
If you like the sound of the Fossil Hybrid HR you don't have to wait to get it either, as it's out from today (November 6) from $195 / £189 (around AU$350).More news: Whitney Houston's Best Friend Robyn Crawford Breaks Silence On Their Love Affair
There was some debate over what operating system Fossil's hybrid watch would use, since the interface in previously-leaked images looked an very bad lot like Wear OS. I've also worn a few smartwatch attempts at hybrids mixing analog hands and screens before.
Keeping a smartwatch charged is incredibly annoying. E Ink and E-Paper displays are a boon for battery life in other smartwatches, most notably the now-dead Pebble family of wearables. Or, like what Google's Wear OS watches offer, but in E Ink. That means the proprietary software on the Hybrid HR won't be compatible with at least some third-party apps out of the box.
In the world of smartwatches, Fossil is best known for being Google's main partner for Wear OS watches. Where it leads next is anyone's guess, but with Google acquiring Fitbit, maybe this could also be what future fitness watches look like. You might expect the extended battery life to come with less functionality, but the watch still can do most typical smartwatch functions - including activity/sleep tracking, heart rate sensing, alarms, displaying notifications, and controlling music. And naturally, the watch hands can move out of the way on demand - as soon as you navigate through the interface using the side buttons, or flick your wrist, the hands move to 3 and 9 to let you see as much as possible.More news: Oven heading to space so astronauts can bake cookies - for science
