Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has told this year's Nobel Prize victor for Economics, Abhijit Banerjee to ignore Union Minister Piyush Goyal's controversial statement attempting to undermine his remarkable achievement.
Nobel laureate Abhijit Banerjee has said that finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman was his contemporary in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and they stood on "similar" lines on "certain" issues during their academic years in the university. Lekin unki samjh ke baare mein to aap sab jante hain. Union commerce minister Piyush Goyal, at a media briefing in Pune, recently described Banerjee as a "Left- leaning" person. "He had praised the NYAY scheme effusively, but the people of India totally rejected his thinking".More news: Warren says she will soon release plan to fund 'Medicare for All'
Banerjee had assisted the Congress party in formulating the NYAY or or Nyuntam Aay Yojana scheme which promised to give Rs 72,000 annually to each of the 20 percent families in the poorest of the poor category. "Especially when the people of this country rejected his suggestion, I think we don't need to accept his ideas". Distancing himself from the unpleasant remarks made against Banerjee by some BJP leaders, Ghosh said people may have divergent views about the acclaimed economist. Ghosh, also a Lok Sabha MP from Medinipur, asserted that that he was among the first to congratulate the Indian- born American economist after the announcement.
BJP general secretary (organisation) BL Santhosh had also trained his guns at the Nobel laureate by linking Banerjee's comments on Indian economy and an article written by Parakala Prabhakar (Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman's husband) on the ogoing crisis to an "ecosystem" that worked against the ruling party whenever elections were around. "They [Congress] asked me a perfectly legitimate question - how much money would it take to implement a guaranteed income. If the BJP had asked me for the same numbers, I would have given it to them. In terms of being a professional, I want to be professional with everyone".More news: With A French Flourish, Romney Unveils Secret Twitter Account
