The area covers approximately 100,000 residents and about 1,900 homes are affected by the mandatory evacuation orders. Many parts of the region are under red-flag warnings - meaning high fire risk - into Friday afternoon.
Officials had to evacuate hundreds of teenagers incarcerated at the Barry J. Nidorf Juvenile Hall facility in Sylmar, a facility that holds 278 teenagers, a lot of them 15 to 18 years old.

Both directions of the Foothill Freeway from the Golden State Freeway to the Ronald Reagan Freeway and the northbound Golden State Freeway's truck route in Sylmar were closed due to the fire for an unknown duration, the CHP said.

The Los Angeles Fire Department web site has details about evacuations, however, at times the site has been non-responsive.
It started when the load on a garbage truck caught on fire and spread to vegetation, Capt. Fernando Herrera of Cal Fire Riverside told CNN affiliate KABC.
"It started just eating up vegetation as fast as the eye can see".
Less than 20 miles away in Moreno Valley, the Reche Fire is 350 acres and 10% contained. The fire went from 100 to 200 acres in about 90 minutes, before almost doubling two hours later.
