The University of the Philippines (UP) earned the honor of being included in the world's top 500 universities for the first time in the Time's Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2020. But both IIT Kharagpur and IIT Delhi have stepped up by 100 ranks from the previous year, reports Times of India. The high point for India was the Indian Institute of Technology, Ropar making it to the top 350 on debut in the list.

The yardstick for the ranking are based on the universities' performance in teaching, research, knowledge transfer and how they are received on the internationally scene. 1,300- university list from 92 countries, Indian is the fifth most - represented nation in the rankings with 56 institutions.

In the area of teaching - the learning environment - UCT's scores increased, with the university jumping up 35 places. As per the new ranking, the gap between the top educational and research institutes of the country and their global contemporaries has widened. The London-based publication claims to provide the most diverse university rankings, measuring the performance of academic institutions performance in 13 indicators, including teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and worldwide outlook.
UNBC has been recognized as one of the best universities in the world. "It now needs to back up these aspirations with high levels of investment - or risk declining further amid increasing global competition, especially from other parts of Asia", said Ellie Bothwell, THE rankings editor. "Having said that, I do not underestimate the efforts by University of Auckland academic staff, and the support provided by their professional colleagues, that go into achieving these rankings" he said.
