The suspect also died in the shootout. "One of our officers succumbed to the injuries sustained". "Prayers go out to all, including the responding officers injured in the shooting".
A weapon, described as a rifle, was recovered at the scene, Riverside Police Department Chief Sergio Diaz said at a Monday night news conference.
"Our hearts ache over the tragic loss of @CHP's own Officer Andre Moye - who will be remembered for his commitment to service and the community of Riverside County", Gov. Gavin Newsom said.
Riverside police detectives will pour over a massive amount of evidence, including video from officers' body-worn cameras, the paperwork of the stop from the deceased officer and witness statements and video over the next few days, Diaz said.
Dozens lined up to salute the officer's flag-draped casket as he was moved from the hospital to a hearse late Monday evening.More news: Dentures got lodged in man's throat for days after surgery
The driver then pulled a rifle from inside their auto and began firing at the patrolman, according to the report. "Next thing I know, I called his dad, and I said, 'Hey, there's a shootout going and there's a CHP officer on a bike, ' and his dad said, 'It was him.' It was unbelievable". The suspect's name hasn't been released.
"We don't know where the suspect was going, where he was headed to, what his affiliations are", Diaz said.
KABC-TV reported that a man identified the shooter as his son, Aaron Luther, 49, of neighboring Beaumont.
"It's hard, I love him", Luther said in an exclusive interview with ABC7. "And I'm sorry for the policeman", he told the station.
"I'm devastated", he said.More news: No, Dak Prescott Is Not Asking for $40 Million a Year
When he was released from prison, Aaron Luther worked in construction but could not perform well because of pain in his knees, his father said.
"I think he just thought he didn't have much to live for". He would not identify them but said they are expected to survive. He says he doesn't know what his son was doing with a gun as a felon, which is illegal.
Video after the shooting showed bullet holes in the front windows of two patrol cars and large holes blown in their back windows.
Aaron Luther appears in a photo provided by his father on August 13, 2019.
