The stabbing of 17-year-old Elijah Al-Amin in the Phoenix suburb of Peoria recalled the killing three years earlier of a black Florida teenager who was shot by white man during an argument over his music.

A modest makeshift memorial outside the convenience store where Al-Amin was stabbed was still erected on Tuesday, with a pair of white porcelain angels, fresh flowers and burning calendars - including one dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe, the Catholic patron saint of Mexico.More news: Biden apologizes for comments on segregationist Democrats after criticism
Police say that surveillance footage shows Adams followed Al-Amin, who is black, into the store, where he lunged at the boy.
Officers arrested Adams on 67th Avenue near the Circle K after he was found with blood on his clothing and body, and later admitted to his involvement in Al-Amin's stabbing.
People were outraged upon hearing of the crime.
Police stopped Adams as he walked away from the store.

Adams, who was released from prison two days before the attack, has been charged with first-degree murder.
Adams has an extensive criminal history, including charges of assault with a weapon and aggravated assault of a correctional employee, marijuana violation, theft, disorderly conduct, and shoplifting, according to Maricopa County Superior Court records, AZ Central reported.
The Department of Corrections said that Adams had not been designated as seriously mentally ill and was not on prescription medication at the time of his release.
