Northern Virginia health officials are investigating a possible measles exposure and trying to identify people at risk of infection.
The number of measles cases confirmed in the United States in 2019 has reached 1,001, a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report said this week.

According to the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, adults born after 1957 who do not have evidence of immunity (either proof of measles vaccination or a titer showing that they are immune to measles) should receive one dose of a measles- containing vaccine, officials said.
Other possible exposure sites are Novant Health UVA Health System Haymarket Medical Center and Inova Fair Oaks Hospital on June 2 through June 4.
Measles is a highly contagious virus spread through coughing, sneezing and contact with droplets from the throat, mouth or nose of an infected individual. The agency further advised that if symptoms appear, a person should seek immediate medical care from a doctor or local health department. In the first stage, most people develop a fever greater than 101 degrees and have a runny nose, watery eyes and a cough. If you have received two doses of a measles containing vaccine (either the measles, mumps and rubella [MMR] vaccine or a measles only vaccine which is available in other countries) you are protected and do not need to take any action.
"I'm a parent - I understand that concern - but again, the message really is around if you have actually come into direct contact with a case of measles you would know that because we would have contacted you, public health would have contacted you", said Russell.

The Santa Barbara County Public Health Department (PHD) has confirmed one additional case of measles in a local resident reporting worldwide travel. The best protection against future measles cases is the vaccination of all susceptible persons. Infants too young to be vaccinated should consider avoiding travel to areas with measles until they can be vaccinated.
