The county of Rockland declared a countywide state of emergency that will last for 30 days or until all unvaccinated children receive the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine.
The case is in New Haven County, said officials.
New York City accounted for about two-thirds of all United States measles cases reported last week.
The city said it would help everyone covered by the order get the vaccine if they can't get it quickly through their regular medical provider.
Officials say both children had been recently vaccinated and that initial testing came back positive for measles, but that actually their vaccine had caused just a mild rash and fever - not an actual measles diagnosis.More news: God of War - Thank You
The commissioner is empowered by law to issue such orders in cases when they might be necessary to protect against a serious public health threat. In Williamsburg, the overwhelming majority of its infected patients are 17 years old or younger, and the immunization-rate amid the Hasidic and Orthodox Jewish communities is significantly lower than the norm.
'In general, the Orthodox community does immunize, ' said Dr. Joseph Kaplovitz, who works at the NYU Langone Stepping Stones Pediatrics clinic in Brooklyn's Borough Park. Infants are advised to get immunized prior to global travel.
In order to achieve herd immunity (which, as you may or may not know, is when most of the people living there are immune, which prevents it from ever reaching the very few that aren't) is only achievable when 93-95 percent of the population is immune.
'This outbreak is being fueled by a small group of anti-vaxxers in these neighborhoods. "They have been spreading unsafe misinformation based on fake science", said Health Commissioner Oxiris Barbot.
Measles "parties" stems from the once-popular trend of "pox parties" - intentionally exposing children to chickenpox, before the Varicella vaccine was rolled out in 1995. The schools are mandated to keep all unvaccinated children out, and any that continue to ignore the decree will be fined and potentially face closure. This leads to cases that arise in the USA after being picked up in another country, and that quickly spread to unvaccinated people that didn't think they would ever encounter it.More news: 'Significant fire' underway at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris
The case is not part of the official MI measles count, which stands at 39.
The CDC says that there have been a number of measles breakouts all over the country, including states like California, New York, and, as of last week, Maryland.
In 2018, there were three confirmed cases of measles in CT. All but 39 of the confirmed cases are in children.
According to the county health department, if a person is immune to measles, it is unlikely that he or she would become ill if exposed.More news: World’s largest plane takes to the skies
