Busch is set to enter this weekend at Auto Club Speedway, during which he is set to compete in the Xfinity Series race, the Production Alliance Group 300, and the Cup Series race, the Auto Club 400, at the track, with 199 career NASCAR victories.
But even if Busch does not get to victory lane at all this weekend, don't expect it to be too long before he earns his 200th and his 201st career NASCAR victories to tie and break Petty's all-time record. Busch won his first NASCAR Cup Series race of the season, the TicketGuardian 500, this past Sunday at ISM Raceway in Phoenix.
It's also an accomplishment that Busch hopes he won't have to be continually asked about in the months and years to come after he crests the 200-win mark, possibly as soon as Saturday afternoon at Auto Club Speedway.
"It doesn't change anything", Busch said.
After sweeping last weekend's three national series races at Phoenix, Kyle Busch now has 199 career wins.
"Just having the opportunities that I have, to go out there and try to win, is important to me", Busch added. "Last year we gave it a shot, with eight (wins)".More news: Frodon and Paisley Park triumph on historic day at Cheltenham
Although Logano ultimately won the 2018 series championship, Truex returns to California for Sunday's Auto Club 400 (at 3:30 p.m. ET on FOX, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio) as motivated as ever in his debut season driving for the Joe Gibbs Racing team.
Or not, depending on how you measure it, of course. Busch led the most overall laps.
What's clear is that Busch has cemented a place as one of the greatest drivers of his era, in any auto and any series. "It's one of my favorite tracks and I felt good about the test back in January".
"I know there's a lot of topics about the whole Richard Petty vs. Kyle Busch thing". I am honored he said that. I feel for him, there's so much talk about it, he just wants to get it over with. It doesn't matter. It's a different time and place. On top of that, Busch is just two wins away from moving into the top 10 all-time in the Cup Series.
Many drivers share the view of Denny Hamlin, who believes Busch couldn't reach his lofty marks in any racing circuit without a combination of outstanding cars and incredible talent. He's got that feel right now, where no matter what vehicle he gets in, whether it's a Truck, Xfinity or Cup auto, he goes out there and runs up front. They outqualify everyone pretty much every week, and then when you put a top Cup guy in a truck that's super-fast, you're going to have the success that you're going to have. "I think in one of those races, it happens this weekend and he gets No. 200".
"It's just fantastic to see how good he is in all types of series and race cars and his win percentages are unbelievable even with all the restrictions that you have now with the amount of races you can run".More news: Gambino 'mob boss' shot dead outside NY home
Busch is nearly always good on the weathered asphalt east of Los Angeles, winning three Cup Series races - including the first of his career in 2005 - and six Xfinity races.
Meanwhile, he has earned two victories in his first two Xfinity Series starts of the season at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and ISM Raceway, and he has earned two victories in his first two Truck Series starts of the season at Atlanta Motor Speedway and Las Vegas Motor Speedway. No one is. Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, even those multiple-time champions aren't even halfway to 200.
"I watched him when I was growing up, and he was dominating races then, and still is", 25-year-old Ryan Blaney said. He just goes out there racing to win every time.
"But for myself and the career that I've had, I've been fortunate to be with a lot of great people, a lot of great sponsors, those that stick around me - like Joe Gibbs, M&M'S, Skittles, Snickers, Interstate Batteries - who have always been behind me, is what it's all about for me", he added. It nearly makes me mad how good he is.
"What is fantastic to me is his win percentage, that's what I find really interesting, how high of a win percentage he has. It frustrates me how he is able to find a way to be better than everybody else a lot of weekends".More news: 'Bomb cyclone' fizzles to rain across U.S. Midwest
