After the closure of the American Space Shuttle Program in 2011, NASA relied on Russia's SoUz Yan to send its astronauts to ISS.
Launched on the company's Falcon 9 rocket, it was the first test mission of a commercially built and operated American spacecraft and rocket designed for humans.
If this six-day test flight goes well, a Dragon capsule could take two NASA astronauts to the orbiting outpost this summer.
NASA chief Jim Bridenstine tweeted his congratulations on "this historic achievement", which brings the United States a big step closer to its goal of again flying astronauts into space on American rockets.More news: Democrats Reject Fox News as Partner in Primary Debates
The SpaceX Crew Dragon successfully docked at the International Space Station over the weekend. This wasn't the first time SpaceX has docked with the ISS, however, it was the first without the robotic arm.
The launch systems are aimed at ending US reliance on Russian rockets for rides to the $100 billion orbital research laboratory, which flies about 250 miles (400 km) above Earth, at about $80 million per ticket.
The capsule was unmanned but carried a dummy called Ripley fitted with all sorts of sensors to measure the effects the launch would have had on humans inside and some supplies.More news: Nightstar Therapeutics (NITE) Downgraded by Svb Leerink
As the capsule closed in on the space station, its nose cap was wide open like a dragon's mouth to expose the docking mechanism. NASA gave spacecraft and Boeing to $ 6.8 billion to make spacecraft carrying astronauts. Splashdown in the Atlantic Ocean is set for 8:45 am, Friday, March 8.
If the spacecraft's descent proceeds in a normal regime, it will travel to the orbital outpost with NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley on its board in July. "Just one more milestone that gets us ready for our flight coming up here". Boeing has similar uncrewed and crewed test flights planned for April and August, respectively, for their own certification tests.
SpaceX already has made 16 trips to the space station using cargo Dragons.More news: Brie Larson Debuts New Captain Marvel vs. Skrulls Fight Scene
