Baby rescued from storm water drain

The little girl had been dumped in Newlands East.

A newborn baby that was dumped in a stormwater drain in Newlands East has been rescued after emergency workers dug a trench to reach the infant on Monday morning.

Various emergency services were involved in the incredible rescue. This was the site where emergency services conducted a harrowing three-hour rescue of a newborn baby girl with the placenta still attached, who had been trapped down the drain.

"Currently she is in a stable condition and the KZN EMS helicopter is now taking off to get the child to the hospital", said McKenzie.

He said: 'Currently she is in a stable condition and our helicopter has taken off with the child to get her to hospital where doctors are waiting to receive her.

"This matter will have to be investigated, to find the parents", he added.

The naked baby can be heard screaming as she is brought out into the sunlight and gently placed into a towel held by a paramedic.

KZN EMS spokesperson Robert McKenzie said: "It's good news for the ending of this rescue today".

The baby was washed six metres down the storm water drain.
