Investigators believe the man accused of kidnapping Jayme Closs killed her parents to clear the way for him to abduct her, a sheriff said on Saturday.
On Thursday, Jayme fled the cabin near the small town of Gordon where she said she had been imprisoned. That led to an intense search that ended on Thursday when she was found alive 70 miles from her home.
Jennifer Halvorson, who is close with Smith, told PEOPLE that Closs is incredibly close with her aunt and glad to be reunited with her.
The same night authorities discovered Jayme missing three months ago, police found her parents James and Denise Closs shot dead in their home.

After officers arrived at the home and took Closs to safety, they told Kristin and her kids to get away from any windows in case the abductor came to the home.
Peter and Kristin Kasinskas, who helped rescue Closs, described the girl as "dirty", "thin" and "really exhausted and run down" after she escaped the hell house Thursday. "Her aunts were nearly second moms", said Halvorson.
An intruder blasted open the door of James and Denise Closs' home near Barron with a shotgun October 15, gunned the couple down and made off with Jayme.
"He was just really quiet whenever I'd see him in the hallways and stuff", said Hannah Kroeze, a former classmate of Patterson's.

"She said to us that, 'This person killed my parents and took me, '" Kasinskas said. "We love you Jayme", Trowbridge said. "She did not go into detail about how she got out of the house or anything like that". It's also the home in which Patterson grew up.
Sunday night, Jake Patterson's defense attorneys - Charlie Glynn and Richard Jones - held a news conference at the Barron County Justice Center.
Property records show their father, Patrick Patterson, was the owner of the home until days after Closs' abduction, when it became property of the bank.
Jayme's grandfather, Robert Naiberg, said that considering the circumstances, the teen is holding up.

"Jayme was the champion that finally said enough is enough", he told CNN's "Anderson Cooper Full Circle" Friday, "We can't be more proud of Jayme".
