"I want to make clear that we have no interest in inappropriately interfering with any ongoing criminal investigations, and to that end, we are in the process of consulting with special counsel Mueller's office", said Cummings.
The hearing marks the latest step in Cohen's transformation from a trusted legal adviser to the president to a public antagonist who has cooperated extensively against him. Most relevant are the details concerning the hush payments to two women who claim to have had sexual affairs with Trump and information on the Trump campaign's dealings with Russian Federation.
Cohen said he will "give a full and credible account of the events that have transpired".
Cummings said that Oversight Committee, which is also slated to take on increases in prescription drug prices later this month, would announce more information about the hearing in the coming weeks.More news: Week 6 Fortnite Challenges: Chilly Gnomes; Weapon Damage Bug (Season 7)
In a statement, Cohen said he accepted the invitation to appear from Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., the committee's chairman, "i$3 n furtherance of my commitment to cooperate and provide the American people with answers".
The Democrats in the House have promised more oversight into the dealings of the Trump presidential campaign and administration, after investigations in the body over the role of Russian interference descended into partisan bickering during the first two years of Trump's term.
Cohen said that he would bury the reporter under financial problems forever, saying "what I'm going to do to you is going to be f*cking disgusting", and adding that it wasn't possible by definition to rape one's spouse, a comment he was later compelled to apologize for making. In a press release, Cummings said, "I thank Michael Cohen for agreeing to testify before the Oversight Committee voluntarily".
Cohen has admitted to offering "hush-money" to two women regarding their affairs with Donald Trump, paying porn star Stormy Daniels and Playboy model Karen McDougal in exchange for their silence regarding their alleged sexual affairs with the president.
Rudy Giuliani, the former mayor of New York City and Trump's television defense lawyer, lashed out against Michael Cohen. An adviser to Cohen, Lanny Davis, said shortly after he was sentenced that the former political fixer wanted to testify and "state publicly all he knows".
Federal prosecutors in the Southern District of NY have implicated, but not charged, the president in the deals reached in the closing weeks of the 2016 election, alleging in court filings that Cohen acted "in coordination with and at the direction of" Trump. On the House Intelligence Committee, for instance, Chairman Adam Schiff of California has said he will issue a subpoena if necessary to obtain Donald Trump Jr.'s phone records to find out who Trump's son called when Trump Jr. called a number blocked in phone records while setting up the June 2016 Trump Tower meeting. It's unclear what Cohen will be allowed to talk about in the hearing and what Robert Mueller, or prosecutors in NY, will want him to keep to himself.More news: De Blasio 'Guarantees Healthcare' for all 600,000 Uninsured New Yorkers
