The DJI Smart Controller displays full HD video, transmitted over auto switching frequencies (2.4 GHz amd 5.8 GHz respectively) up to 8km. For comparison, the average high-end smartphone has a maximum brightness in the range of 5-600 cd/m² (though it should be noted that while the 1000 cd/m² display on the Smart Controller is bright, the standalone DJI CrystalSky displays have a maximum brightness of 2000 cd/m²). Also, the control sticks are integrated into the design and removable, so you can pack this thing up tightly in a backpack without damaging the gear.
The Smart Controller can be used regardless of season as well, with DJI saying that it can operate in temperatures as low as -4-degrees Fahrenheit and as high as 104-degrees Fahrenheit. Another new feature is DJI GO-Share which easily transfers imagery from the Controller to your mobile device.

Will you upgrade to the new DJI Smart Controller??
The Smart Controller is going to be compatible with any aircraft using OccuSync 2.0, which now means just the Mavic 2 Series of drones. It appears that other third party apps can also be installed, but DJI takes no responsibility if something goes wrong when using them. DJI will also be selling the controller bundled with compatible drones as well. A microSD card port is built into the controller to expand the 16GB on board memory. "We invite everyone at CES to try it at our booth, which features our latest innovations in the drone and imaging field and demonstrates how DJI has established itself as a global technology leader".More news: Adam Gase Hired As Jets Head Coach
With OcuSync, video transmission automatically switches between 2.4GHz and 5.8GHz to reduce interference and also ensure long-range transmission is reliable. It runs a customized version of Android with apps for sharing and editing. A two-hour charge nets about 2.5 hours of use.

When flying a drone on a bright, sunny day, navigating with the display on an attached phone or tablet can end up being hard to see clearly. It will be interesting to see the uptake of the Smart Controller considering it's retail price. Since the controller has a built-in mic and speaker, you can use SkyTalk to share your drone's view directly on a platform like Instagram and talk over it from your position.
