Despite the sad occasion, there was still a glimmer of hope for justice as the Harris County Sherriff's Office charged Larry D. Woodruffe, 24, with capital murder for the deadly shooting, according to the Associated Press.
The seven-year-old who was tragically killed in a drive-by shooting will be laid to rest on Tuesday by her family in Texas, who are in no doubt devastated by this heartbreaking, unexpected loss.
He and Eric Black Jr, 20 - who authorities say acted as his getaway driver - have now been charged. Both suspects remain jailed.
Jazmine's mother, LaPorsha Washington, opened the funeral by reading a letter - which she said was from her daughter in heaven - to the mourners who filled more than half of the 2,000-person sanctuary of Community of Faith Church in Houston. The girl's killing prompted an outpouring of support for her family from celebrities and ordinary people across the country.
Jazmine's family had identified a white man driving a red truck as the shooter and police initially circulated a suspect sketch depicting a white man.More news: Athletics Expect Heisman Winner Kyler Murray To Enter NFL Draft
Woodruffe, 24, is seen in a photo tweeted by the Harris County Sheriff's Office in Texas on January 8, 2019.
Mr Black admitted taking part in the shooting. Both men were taken into custody on Saturday after police received a tip from activist Shaun King, who said one of his "confidential informants" had identified the suspects.
"This is most likely a case of mistaken identity", said Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez at a Sunday news conference. Woodruffe was arrested along with Eric Black Jr. on January 5 but was held on felony drug possession pending further investigation.
Woodruffe has six prior convictions, including pleading guilty to choking a girlfriend, drug possession and being a felon in possession of a firearm, according to court records.
Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg said she and a committee of senior prosecutors will decide whether to pursue the death penalty "at a later date".More news: Gordon Ramsay faces Twitter wrath over sexual innuendos toward Sofia Vergara
