The true victor initially thought his lottery scratchcard, bought at a shop in Vacaville last December, was worth $10,000 (£8,000). He went home and shared his happy news with this two roommates.
"Right away, he suspected one of his roommates of stealing the ticket while he was sleeping and reported it to the police", Polen said.
Vacaville Police Department shared the freaky story on its Facebook page where they wrote: "The Lottery Investigator invited Adul to the Lottery's Sacramento District Office to collect his winnings, but instead of him celebrating his big win he was arrested by Vacaville PD Detectives who had obtained an arrest warrant for him for Grand Theft".
His punt on a pre-Christmas payout paid off big time with the ticket winning him $US10 million ($14 million). Adul Saosongyang, 35, from Vacaville, west of Sacramento, was arrested on Monday when he tried to cash in on the stolen ticket.
All lottery wins over $600 dollars are checked out by lottery staff and when they learned of the suspected theft the investigators joined forcers with the police.
That was when the Lottery investigator and a Vacaville police detective started comparing notes and collaborating on the theft investigation.

That's the number of dollars he won with a lottery ticket he purchased December 20, a ticket his roommate allegedly stole. Lottery officials then invited Saosongyang to its office under the premise of awarding the prize.
"Although, I'm sure everything will work out in the end", he concluded in an email to The Washington Post, adding a smiley face.
