Managers at a home improvement firm in Southern China have been jailed for cruel and unusual punishment of workers in which staff were flogged and forced to drink urine and eat cockroaches for missing sales targets.
The "extreme punishment", which occurred in Zunyi city in Guizhou province, was captured on video and leaked to social media site Weibo last week, China Youth Daily said.
The footage was titled "Employees who failed to meet their goals forced to drink urine".More news: New Porsche 911 Passed Final Global Stress Tests Before Arrival
The post included a video showing a man standing topless in the centre of a room being whipped by another man with a belt, with other people gathered around watching.
Previous reports have alleged cases of employees slapping each other at a company event to boost motivation, and staff forced to crawl on a public road or kiss rubbish bins as a punishment or for team building.
The managers previously punished low-achieving employees by forcing them to eat mustard or chilli, according to China News, but penalties have escalated since October to eating cockroaches and receiving beatings with a belt.More news: Red Dead Redemption 2 Sales Have Already Outpaced RDR1
The company is reported to have a history of shaming and punishing its staff by making them drink toilet water, vinegar and shaving their heads.
Netizens have questioned why the staff did not resign after being subjected to such maltreatment, but one employee shared via Pear Video that they were owed two months' pay by the firm.
Two of the managers were each jailed for 10 days while a third received five days, according to a Zunyi police statement posted on Weibo. The person also alleged that the company had threatened to reduce their severance pay if they quit.More news: Harry Kane: Rooney should be England captain on Wembley farewell
