Amazon won't be sidelined by brick and mortar stores this holiday. Amazon didn't say when the promotion would end, but described the duration as "limited".
The move makes hundreds of millions of items eligible for free shipping.
"With hundreds of millions of items available for free shipping to all Amazon customers and more than three million items available with Prime FREE Same-Day Delivery, customers can enjoy the largest selection of items that are fast and free". Both Target and Best Buy are offering similar promotions. Typically, Amazon shoppers have to spend $25 to qualify for free shipping or pay $119 a year for a Prime membership. It's $49 free shipping threshold didn't last long after Walmart unveiled its policy of free two-day shipping with every order $35 or more in January 2017.
With the all-important holiday season kicking off around Thanksgiving later this month, retailers are jockeying for customers' dollars and hoping to outpace Amazon, which takes up almost 50 cents of each dollar spent online in the US. Sales were $43.7 billion in the year-earlier period.
