The bridge is part of Beijing's " Greater Bay Area" Scheme, which aims to provide better transport links between Hong Kong and mainland China. "The more Hong Kong is integrated into mainland China, the less is there a case for it to be given very special treatment".
The world's longest sea bridge, connecting Hong Kong, Macau and the Chinese mainland will open to traffic on Wednesday, officials said, after complaints about the secrecy surrounding the project.
Hong Kong residence will have to vie for 300 permanent permits to drive to Macau, though a certain number of non-permit holders will be allowed to cross each day as well. "You see it, and you know you're linked up to the motherland". It incorporates 400,000 tons of steel which is 4.5 times more than in San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge.More news: Meteor shower should be visible Sunday night
The main section of the project is a 22.9km bridge and a 6.7 km underwater tunnel. The tunnel runs between two artificial islands, each measuring 100,000 square meters.
While an impressive engineering feat, the building of the bridge brought its own controversies.
The waters under the bridge are home to the Chinese white dolphin, a species whose population is seriously declining, with only 47 of them seen in the year from April 2017 to March 2018.More news: Mourinho bats off Real return to focus on stopping Ronaldo
The construction of the multibillion-dollar bridge had begun in December 2009.
The bridge has also faced considerable public criticism over safety standards. Hong Kong officials have previously blamed the death toll on lack of manpower, and earlier this year a court fined several subcontractors over the issue.More news: Investigation launched as Red Funnel refloated and passengers safe
