"I think now during this time period where very powerful men are being exposed for their actions from the past, I think the judiciary committee missed an opportunity to straight off kick him off and find someone else", he said. The disturbing accusations threw a wrench into Kavanaugh's confirmation to replace Anthony Kennedy on the Supreme Court, which initially appeared to be a slam dunk for Republicans.
The FBI has conducted six background checks on Kavanaugh over the years.
Later on Wednesday, Grassley wrote to the senior Democrat on the committee, Dianne Feinstein, requesting she immediately provide an unredacted copy of the letter Ford sent her in July about the assault allegation, saying he must review it before Monday's hearing.
