President Donald Trump had late Thursday accused Kerry of holding "illegal meetings with the very hostile Iranian Regime, which can only serve to undercut our great work to the detriment of the American people".
"Secretary Kerry stays in touch with his former counterparts around the world just like every previous Secretary of State, and in a long phone conversation with Secretary Pompeo earlier this year he went into great detail about what he had learned about the Iranian's view".
"You can't find precedent for this in United States history and the secretary ought not engage in this kind of behavior", Pompeo continued, in answer to a question.
Kerry told conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt this week that he had met with Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif "three or four" times since leaving office to discuss the Iran nuclear deal and other issues.More news: Public gatherings banned in Harare over cholera
"Mr. President, you should be more anxious about Paul Manafort meeting with Robert Mueller than me meeting with Iran's FM", Kerry said on Twitter shortly after Pompeo's remarks, referring to Trump's former campaign chairman who on Friday agreed to cooperate with federal investigators into Russian meddling in the 2016 USA election.
"I think I've seen him three or four times", Kerry said in an interview with Hugh Hewitt on Salem Radio in NY on Wednesday September 12, the radio anchor's website reported.
"You know, that's not how it works", Kerry said.

"Former secretaries of state - all of them, from either political party - ought not to be engaged in" this kind of activity, he said.
A day later he added: "John Kerry can't get over the fact that he had his chance and blew it!"
Pompeo on Friday said he saw Kerry at the Munich Security Conference last February with two other Obama officials - former secretary of energy Ernest Moniz and former undersecretary of state Wendy Sherman. "He was the one that created this MESS in the first place!"
"I don't have personal knowledge of those meetings, but, if that is happening, again, I would find it very inappropriate", said State Department official Manisha Singh.More news: 'Monster' Hurricane Florence aims to drench Carolinas | KYW
