But it's the creation of a new "popular film" category that's stirring outrage among Academy voters and forcing yet another hard conversation about race in Hollywood, reports CBS News' Vladimir Duthiers. Looking back, this decision feels a little unfair because if the category was introduced a few years back there would have been many films that could received an Oscar.
The next ceremony in February will be the first to include the new award for outstanding achievement in popular film.
For 2019, organizers are hoping to produce a "more accessible" three-hour show - by presenting some of the awards during commercial breaks, Academy president John Bailey and chief executive officer Dawn Hudson told members.More news: Iran denounces Trump's tariffs targeting Turkey
- A new category is being designed around achievement in popular film.
But amusing (not really) enough, this decision wasn't even the most freakish one that the Oscars made, with their decision to include a brand new category called Achievement in Popular Film being their most perplexing and out-of-touch decision. The biggest Academy Awards audience on record came in 1998 when the blockbuster "Titanic" was named best picture. It would likely mean that big-budget crowd-pleasers, even ones as successful and critically acclaimed as "Black Panther", would never be considered for Best Picture.
There are exceptions, of course, like when "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" won Best Picture in 2003, or win "Annie Hall" did the same in 1977.More news: Fox’s Laura Ingraham: I wasn’t talking about race
Plus, there's the whole "popular films should already be nominated" argument. The Dark Knight is an example of a blockbuster hit robbed of a Best Picture nomination which led to the Academy increasing the number of nominees in the Best Picture category from five to ten.
"It truly is something that in the year Black Panther, a movie made just about entirely by and with black people, grosses $700 million, the Academy's reaction is, 'We need to invent something separate.but equal, ' " he tweeted.

"There's a lot of reasons to believe that would have shaken up the hidebound ideas of what an Oscar movie is", she said. "My favorite joke that I've seen on Twitter concerning this issue was by somebody who quipped that had this category only been implemented sooner, Adam Sandler would have had 15 Oscars by now".
