We know that Fallout 76, the latest in Bethesda's post-apocalyptic shooter series, will be an always-online multiplayer game set in West Virginia. In addition, players are able to make videos, take screenshots, and stream their experiences. Steam is the largest digital distribution platform on Windows machines, with well over 150 million users worldwide. In a follow up e-mail to PCGamer, Bethesda confirmed the lack of a Steam release. Fallout 76 will first launch as the BETA, which Bethesda plans to be the full game with progress saved to continue under the official launch. Still, it's a noteworthy move to skip Steam in part because the previous Fallout games were released on Valve's store. Market intelligence company SuperData believes "Fortnite's" success - along with the popularity of voice and text chat app Discord - is encouraging other publishers to break from Steam.
