Three towns in the Upper Valley are among the six Vermont towns where state officials have found mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus, which can infect people and cause flu-like symptoms and more serious illness in rarer cases.
West Nile virus is transmitted through the bite of a house mosquito, which has picked up the virus by feeding on an infected bird. People over age 50 or a compromised immune system are most at risk to develop severe symptoms.
