Pictures shared on social media appear to show a fireball rising into the air in the Heliopolis district.

Preliminary reports state that the blast, which was loud enough to be heard throughout the Egyptian capital, was related to a fuel dump, which could have happened at a jet fuel depot just outside the airport.

Reuters has reported that all activity at the airport has been suspended, but some locals report that operations have either been resumed or were never stopped in the first place.

A huge explosion has reportedly been heard at Cairo Airport.

An explosion rocked a chemicals factory near Cairo's airport Thursday night, prompting firefighters and ambulances to rush to the scene. However, the Ministry of Civil Aviation said in a statement the blast would not disrupt air traffic.

According to State TV, the civil defense team has brought fire at Cairo fuel tanks near airport under control. Later that year, ISIS claimed responsibility for a deadly airport bombing in Brussels.

While flights have not been affected, some witnesses described the auto traffic in and out of the airport as a "nightmare". There is no information available on possible injuries or fatalities.
