President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto are among Kenyans who have lost a sizeable chunk of social media following, in an ongoing purge by social network giant Twitter to weed out dubious accounts.

Twitter announced on Wednesday that users would see a drop in their follower accounts on Thursday as the company clamped down on "problematic" and "fake" accounts. On 11 July, he had 34.89 million followers but the number dropped to 34.47 million in just 24 hours.
"People having an artificially-inflated follower count made up of bots and redundant accounts is at best deceiving and at worst, fraud".
"Over the years, we've locked accounts when we detected sudden changes in account behavior", Gadde explained. The average user was told to expect a drop of about four followers or fewer, while the more followed account holders were warned it could be a lot higher.
