Firefighters say because they were able to secure a strong fire line along Highway 550, La Plata County allowed some residents from the Tamarron, Glacier Club and Rockwood subdivisions to return home Wednesday afternoon.
The fire began Tuesday about 2 miles west of Silverthorne, a town with about 4,700 residents and about 65 miles west of Denver. There were pre-evacuation orders in other areas along Wyoming's border with Colorado as well.
Officials are still investigating the cause of the 416 fire.
El Paso County officials say, the haze across southern Colorado Tuesday morning was most likely smoke from the 416 fire. "No homes have been lost to the fire".

The blaze in Moab, known for its dramatic red rocks, started in a wooded area Tuesday night and quickly spread to homes over less than a square mile, Police Chief Jim Winder said. It's only 15 percent contained, according to the National Forest Service. Fire spokesman Brian Eady told the Associated Press that the increase noted over the weekend was the result of both the fire's natural growth and intentional blazes sparked by firefighters in an effort to control its movement.
"The fire dangers are only increasing in critically dry conditions".
A wildfire burning grass and brush in central Washington threatened several dozen homes and other infrastructure, while more than 250 firefighters raced to the hills overlooking Los Angeles to battle a blaze in thick brush surrounded by large homes. It has burned 100 acres in the Arapahoe and Roosevelt National Forest, officials said. The closure order, which is enacted through Stage 3 fire restrictions, closes forest campgrounds, day-use areas, roads and trails.
In Utah, a fast moving fire destroyed multiple structures including 8 homes. "We need to take every action possible to reduce the risk of human-caused fires".
Voos said people who have been evacuated can not return to their properties to retrieve belongings, as officials need to know that the area is clear.
