Andy Spade said that the couple had been living apart but in the same neighborhood, caring for their 13-year-old daughter Bea.
He said she "sounded happy" the night before and her death was a complete shock. [Kate] was actively seeking help for depression and anxiety over the last 5 years, seeing a doctor on a regular basis and taking medication for both depression and anxiety.

"One thing we feel is that any talk that they do that helps somebody else, Katy would have liked that", he said.
"She was a great talent who had an immeasurable impact on American fashion and the way the world viewed American accessories", they said.
"She was actively seeking help and working closely with her doctors to treat her disease, one that takes far too many lives", he says. She was 55 years old.
Our thoughts are with Kate Spade's loved ones during this hard time. "We are deeply heartbroken and miss her already".

An unnamed source told Page Six that Kate had been a "major alcoholic", while additional anonymous sources also claimed that Kate appeared to have a drinking problem. We loved creating our businesses together. "We loved each other very much and simply needed a break", Andy Spade added. "There were no business problems. We were co-parenting our handsome daughter", he stressed. Andy said he had not seen the note.
"We are grateful for the incredible outpouring of love and support the family has received over the last few days", the statement reads. They moved to NY in the mid-1980s before Kate launched Kate Spade Handbags in 1993.
"My main concern is Bea and protecting her privacy as she deals with the unimaginable grief of losing her mother", he concluded.
