As per reports, she tried allegedly luring a group of four BSc final year students when she went to MKU last month for a refresher course. Referring to the "big official", Devi is heard promising that students willing to take up the task will get favours in academics, marks, and financial benefits "in a bank account".
The assistant professor of the autonomous college was finally arrested from her house after she locked herself when the police reached there.
Hours after a complaint was lodged by the college and a women's association, police questioned the lecturer at her home and detained her.
The Governor in a statement in Chennai said the probe will be conducted by retired IAS official R Santhanam and the decision was taken based on a report from the university. After CPM raised the issue, Purohit, who is also the chancellor of the university, issued a statement, stating that an inquiry commission has been appointed to probe the matter. The students were advised not to inform anyone, but the teacher said they were free to inform their parents if they wished.
According to The Hindu, while the professor could not be contacted, she revealed to a news channel that her the whole conversation had been twisted by her students and extracting sexual favours from them was not her intention.
Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar told reporters in Chennai that such "black sheep" can not be allowed and assured that the government will take action against her.

Nirmala Rani, advocate and member of AIDWA who led a protest in the college opposed multiple enquiries ordered by Governor, the university and the college as it would only lead to secondary victimisation of the poor girl students who firmly said no to the offer made by her teacher.
Police sources said Nirmala Devi completed her graduation from Devanga College itself and did her research in MKU.
