The company is now launching the second generation of its high-performance CPUs and is in a better place than ever to keep the pressure on Intel.
Since AMD's Ryzen 2000 CPUs aren't available yet, we expect to see even higher clock speeds from other overclockers soon. AMD plans on continuing its streak with the launch of the 2nd Generation Ryzen CPUs aimed at consumer market.
While Intel Core processors have a maximum of 6 cores for the top model in the 8th gen series, the base model of the 2nd generation AMD Ryzen have 6 cores at one-third the price.More news: Greens announce plan to legalise cannabis
There's also 2 new Ryzen 5 CPUs that were launched alongside the Ryzen 7 CPUs. It will be a few days before reviews hit, but it looks like at least one overclocker has already managed to push Zen+ to its limits, achieving a 5.88GHz overclock on the upcoming Ryzen 7 2700X.
Intel's new i7 8700k, which sells for about $350, has only six cores, in comparison, as Engadget pointed out.
Additionally AMD has also launched their new X470 chipset motherboards which use the same AM4 mount as the previous gen X370 boards.More news: California can lose most in trade dispute between US, China
AMD finally opened up pre-orders for its second-generation of Ryzen chips last week, with the processors set to arrive this Thursday (April 19). The new processors are led by the company's latest flagship CPU, the eight-core Ryzen 7 2700X. The Ryzen 5 2600X has 6 cores and 12 threads with 19MB Smart Prefetch Cache.
The four 2-gen Ryzen processors arriving this week, which are built using a 12nm process and use the Zen+ architecture, include both the 2700X and 2600X chips, along with their non-X versions. That's a bit faster than the 2700, for a power draw of 95 W. For those looking for a chip that's easier to cool down, both the Ryzen 7 2700 and the Ryzen 5 2600 only pulls 65 W. It's still a six-core processor with 12 threads, and capable of a max boost speed of 3.9 GHz.
The Ryzen 5 2600 is the most affordable chip announced this week, at $199.More news: Critically endangered western lowland gorilla born in Smithsonian zoo
