Nearly a week after nobody claimed the body of an 11-year-old girl who was raped and murdered in Gujarat's Surat, the city police released two photographs of the child on social media seeking help in identifying her.
Days earlier, a 19-year-old Jamshedpur boy was arrested for slashing his five-year-old cousin's throat for resisting his rape attempts. Surat Police Commissioner Satish Sharma had yesterday said that a DNA sample taken from the girl's body had been sent to the Forensic Sciences Laboratory for identification. However, police have no information about her family.

The police are now scanning the list of the missing persons to establish girl's identity and to find out details about her family. The victim is said to be held captive, tortured and raped over a period of time, said the police on Sunday.
Odisha's Director General of Police (DGP) R P Sharma told reporters that all the superintendents of police (SPs) in his state have been asked to collect data on missing girls in their district after the Surat Police informed his force they suspect the rape and murder victim was from Odisha.

He said Police have registered a case of rape and also booked the unidentified accused under The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. The perpetrators of the gruesome crime would not be spared, the minister asserted. "Our daughters will definitely get justice".
A doctor at the Civil Hospital in Surat had said the nature of injuries suggested that she was possibly held captive, tortured and raped.
